Story 

Unreal Life is an indie game from independent developer Yokaze, which won the “Award of New Face” award in Japan. Are you ready to get lost in the magical pixel world where you travel with the small, lovely character and the magical ability to touch her memories?  

Unreal Life opens with a little girl who has lost her mind. She no longer remembers who she is, what’s going on, why she’s all alone… The only memory left is an unfamiliar name “Miss Sakura”.  

She decides to find Miss Sakura in hopes of regaining her lost memory. While struggling with many questions, she also realized that she had a special ability: to touch and read memories from everything around her. Whenever she touches any object, she can see a part of the memory of the surroundings through the point of view of that object.  

By linking, comparing, and piecing together memory events, you are in turn led through the emotional world of the game. You can explore the past and experience many other levels of introspection and follow clues to find your lost memories. 

Gameplay 

The gameplay of Unreal Life is simply touching, seeing, and reading memories. Our little girl only remembers Miss Sakura which seems to be someone’s name or her own name. That is all. But thanks to her special ability, the girl just needs to touch an object to read the memory from the object’s point of view.  

The ultimate goal of the player is to help her regain lost memories, understand what is going on, who she is, where she is, what to do now, and why there is no one else around her… And to do this, with the strange ability available, obviously, your job is to touch all the objects on the road, see, read, and memorize, then compare memories of the past and present, see through differences in perspectives, solve a series of mysteries, and find out your true identity and circumstances. 

Your main job is to follow the memory fragments, collect many objects on the way to enrich your memories, and at the same time, you have the opportunity to compare things to be more objective and get back a complete memory of each incident in the past. You know, not every piece of the image is correct. As the saying goes: half a bread is still bread, but half of the truth is not truth.

Depending on what you see, and the decisions you make along the way, Unreal Life offers four endings to the player. You want to go deep into the subconscious, find the pieces of the past to understand yourself, overcome the pain or choose to lose yourself, live with the joys of the present? Each player will have their own view and decision.  

Pixel graphics are an art 

It is not random that Unreal Life is loved and voted by so many people. The whole game is made in 2D pixel graphics, but the pixels here will change your view of this retro visual style.  

The color is smooth, dreamy, romantic, but strangely lonely, describing the sadness and disorientation of the character. The general color tone is dreaming blue, black, and white, along with meticulous character and object creation. Besides them is the melodious melody and the sometimes-discrete piano sound that is memorable. 

Along with the romantic, contemplative storyline, Unreal Life will take you to another world from the first images.
