Story
The White Door has a bit of a detective, a bit of dark melancholy, and a surreal gloomy atmosphere that will make you get goosebumps, and then feel sad for the people in the story.
The White Door begins when a man named Robert Hill wakes up in an empty white room that we later learn is the special ward in the Mental Health Facility. He is said to have severe memory loss. Every daily routine is strictly by procedure and under the close supervision of this establishment. Sometimes when he was sober, Robert had a glimpse of some fragmented, indistinct memory. In return, when he fell asleep, it was also when Robert remembered the most.
Players will accompany Robert through long restless nights and help him recall all his painful memories. What happened to this poor man? What made him so dark and chaotic both mentally and spiritually? And what exactly is the situation that Robert is in? All will be cleared when you get to the end of the game.
It will only take you about 2.5 hours to complete this game, but the human story and the alarming situation in the game will make you think about it for a while after playing.
Facing depression, a scary disease with no signs
The White Door is a point-and-click adventure game in which you’ll be on a mind adventure where a person is suffering from severe depression.
The White Door is divided into 7 days, corresponding to 7 days of the week which are also 7 chapters of the story, and is a cyclical loop that continues from week to week in this treatment facility. Every day, after you complete the required unfinished tasks, a little memory will come back, adding a splash of color to the empty room you are in.
The White Door possesses strange gameplay like what is hidden in the character’s mind. You will be the one to help Robert carry out his series of daily routines, slowly with the help of the cool split-screen feature. Through that, along with dreams, incomplete sleep, beautiful memories, and pieces of broken memories that cause depression gradually emerge.
In the player, you will constantly have to solve many common and difficult puzzles to decipher the unknown dark corners of Robert Hill’s mind.
The atmosphere changes day by day
At this treatment facility, every day with its own incident, weather, and event, will have its own atmosphere. The thrill of the unknown, the half-truths and events that seem to be hidden in the surreal world of dreams, or some sudden sleepwalking make the whole game wrapped in feelings of strange, scary, and no way out.
Along with the haunting music of composer Victor Butzelaar, from the theme song to the discrete sound, when melodious and dreamy in the game, The White Door makes a memorable story about the tragic mind of a person engulfed in depression.
Weak soul in a cruel society
But implementing a seemingly simple schedule based on people’s daily activities given by the game is not as simple as you think. Brushing teeth, washing face, making beds, reading books, cleaning rooms… All have to be done manually from Robert’s point of view. That means you have to connect with the character, control him to do everything bit by bit, pick up each item and follow the correct process. You will feel very strange, to the point of absurdity because not only personal activities but what seems to be natural reflexes or human-conditioned reflexes, in The White Door also must be done manually. For example, blinking, rubbing your eyes, rubbing your hands, or even crying.
Things gradually clear up when you realize that Robert seems to be unusual. His mind and mind were completely blank like a blank sheet of paper. Around Robert, although there were still some other NPCs, most of them echoed from afar because they were originally only memories in him.
The story in The White Door takes a turn in the direction of detective horror when it comes to the fact that Robert’s ex-girlfriend suddenly dies mysteriously just before he loses his mind. Since that day Robert officially fell into depression and locked himself in the house without contacting anyone. But what happened before that to lead to this death?
The deeper you go into the game, it seems that the dark corners where Robert gradually appears. They appear in many different forms but all share the same scary black color and haunting whispers. Robert is showing more and more self-destructive intentions, and self-harm as he sinks into thoughts with no way out.
All because of that terrible depression. It is more terrible and more mind-blowing than any other disease. For those who do not dare to overcome or stand up, any loss or failure in daily life can make them a devil for themselves. Ironically, even if you die from taking your own life due to depression, everything around is still the same, humanity is still indifferent and all relationships still exist as part of a moving machine. That’s what real life is. And so it has invisibly stomped on weak, hurt souls, like Robert.
