Dandara Trials of Fear Edition is a unique metroidvania where you control Dandara, a female warrior who can jump between surfaces without the need for gravity. Instead of running and jumping like a normal game, you will jump from wall to ceiling, from ceiling to floor to avoid enemies and explore the world of Salt, which is being oppressed by a tyrannical force.

Movement mechanism

First, you can’t walk. Well, walking is a luxury in this world. You’ll be jumping from surface to surface in a fixed trajectory. Every white surface is a safe landing spot, while every other color is… something that wants to kill you. This way of moving makes Dandara feel completely different from classic metroidvania games. You can’t just move forward, you have to constantly calculate which direction to jump, like solving a geometry problem while a swarm of enemies is shooting at you.

To put it in perspective, imagine you’re a fly stuck in a bedroom. You can only land on the ceiling, on the walls, on the window ledges, but never on the ground. Add to that a bunch of enemies with laser guns, spikes, and deadly traps, and you’ve got Dandara.

The best part is that once you get the hang of it, you’ll feel like a real ninja, flying around with fluidity. If you’ve ever played Celeste, you’ll know that “hit the right button, hit the right rhythm, and everything flows like water” feeling.

How to fight?

Not only does Dandara have unique moves, but her combat is also interesting. The main character doesn’t use a sword or a stick, but instead shoots energy beams from the palms of her hands. It sounds cool, but it’s a lot harder than you think. Why? Here’s why:

• You can’t move and attack at the same time, because shooting requires you to stand still to reload.
• Every shot has a slight delay, so if you don’t time it right, you’ll be attacked by the enemy first.
• Enemies come in all shapes and sizes: some fly, some shoot, some stab from the ground, some charge straight at you.

The only way to survive is to keep jumping, find a safe position, take advantage of the angle of fire, and strike accurately. This is not the kind of game where you can just rush in and spam the attack button.

Very special map

If you’ve played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night or Hollow Knight, you’ll be familiar with the metroidvania style of maps. They’re huge, with lots of nooks and crannies, and some of them are locked down, requiring you to unlock abilities to return to later. Dandara does that, but with a twist: the map doesn’t follow any fixed direction. Because you can jump and grab onto any surface, there are times when things get confusing, when you’re spinning backwards, when you find yourself going in circles without knowing why.

Some areas have a rotation mechanic, meaning the entire screen turns upside down when you activate a switch. It feels like you’ve had too much coffee and the world around you is dancing. Also, re-exploring old areas after getting new skills is a highlight. For example, there was an area with doors blocking you at the beginning, but after getting the skill to open energy gates, you can go back and open up a whole new path.

Dandara is real

Dandara is not a fictional character. She is inspired by Dandara dos Palmares, a Brazilian heroine who fought against slavery in the 17th century. In the game, the world of Salt is ruled by a force, and your mission is to liberate it.

The storytelling in the game is not in the form of long cutscenes, but mostly hidden in the environment and small bits of dialogue. You meet strange characters, walls with inscriptions, and you have to piece together the story yourself. It’s a storytelling style similar to Dark Souls, where if you don’t pay attention, you’ll miss the deeper meaning of the world.

Graphics

At first glance, Dandara may look like a retro pixel art game, but don’t let appearances fool you! This isn’t the blocky, blocky 8-bit pixel art of yore. Everything is smooth, detailed, and soulful, whether it’s the lighting effects or the tiny movements of the characters. Each area in the game has its own color scheme, reflecting the mood and theme of that place:

• The surreal areas, where space seems distorted, reflect the imbalance of the Salt world.
• The dark, cold areas filled with grey stone walls create a suffocating feeling of oppression.
• The bright, colorful areas are full of energy, as if freedom and hope are returning.
