Description

If one day you wake up and find yourself without a home, without a fridge to search for instant noodles, without a bed to lie on your phone until 3am. Then congratulations, you might have entered the world of As Far As The Eye. This game is a strange journey of a group of tiny children named Pupils, struggling to survive and crawling back to “The Eye” – the final destination in a world that is completely flooded.

Introduce about As Far As The Eye

At first glance, As Far As The Eye looks like a postcard sent from the introvert planet. The pastel tones are as gentle as morning dew, the characters are as soft as flan, and the soundtrack is as soothing as a mother’s lullaby during a summer afternoon. But don’t let the appearance fool you. This is not a picnic in the woods, but a true strategic survival journey. You are part route planner, part logistics manager, part agricultural tycoon, sometimes also a spiritual shaman and babysitter because the Pupils are innocent and cry a lot.

Step by step journey

Each level in As Far As The Eye is divided into stops called “halts”, where you have to stop, collect resources and prepare for the next stage. Each halt is a small map with a time limit (because the flood will come), and resources are also limited. At each stop, you will need to consider the camping location, choose the right construction, build infrastructure, collect enough resources, no more, no less, because carrying too much will put you in danger. Once, I was busy accumulating rice and rocks to go a long way but forgot to make a car. When the flood came, the whole team stood there, looking at each other, then got swept away. Tragic but also… funny.

Each halt will force you to make a series of quick and imperfect decisions. You will always lack something like time, food, manpower, or simply… space. And it is in that lack that the game shows its cruelty and intelligence.

Little Pupils

Pupils are not stupid NPCs. They have their own stat system such as learning ability, carrying capacity, working speed, and perseverance. Instead of leveling up like normal RPGs, Pupils learn their profession by working. If you send them to chop wood, they will become lumberjacks, if you send them to research, they will become scholars. But not all of them are easy to manage. Some are lazy, some are violent, some are perfectionists, taking forever to do anything without letting anyone interfere with their work.

Once you get to know each Pupil in As Far As The Eye, you’ll start to love them. You’ll have your favorites, your pranksters, and your mischief-makers. That’s part of what makes the game so personal and emotional.

Construction mechanism

Every building in As Far As The Eye is temporary, you build it and then leave it. But that doesn’t mean you can build it carelessly. Each building has its own role, it can be a place to rest, a car factory, a school to increase skills, or even a resource storage. The important thing is not how much you build, but what you build, when, and when to destroy it to save resources. Just like a startup in a flooded countryside, you have to know how to handle things quickly, adapt quickly, and know when to give up. If you build everything too fast, all your efforts can go down the drain.

Resource management like… heart attack

In As Far As The Eye, there is no such thing as infinite mining. Resources are finite, and every time you leave a halt, that place becomes desolate, a place you will never return to. The game forces you to calculate the inventory problem including what to bring, what to leave behind, how much to prepare for the next stage while you do not know what the upcoming map will be like. Once I brought too much stone because I was afraid of running out, but unexpectedly the next map was full of stone, but lacked food. Pupils looked at me like I was a traitor. The good thing here is that every failure is your fault. You cannot blame the system, AI, or bad luck. It all depends on the player’s decision.

Destination The Eye – a mysterious place

You’re told you must take the Pupils to The Eye, but where is it? Is it a safe haven? Is it heaven? No one knows. As Far As The Eye doesn’t say. It’s just that “getting the kids to The Eye is the only goal”. You go because you have to. And the journey gets harder, longer, more complicated. There are times when you wonder: will there be anything when you get there? Or will it just be an empty ending?

It is this ambiguity that makes The Eye such a wonderful symbol of a life goal where we are not sure what lies at the end of the road. But we keep going, because staying here means death.

As Far As The Eye has no plot but very emotional

It’s often thought that for a game to be emotionally engaging, it needs to have a well-crafted story: a protagonist with a clear motive, a villain with a sinister plot twist, a climax, a tragic ending, or a thought-provoking conclusion. But As Far As The Eye says, “We don’t do that here.”

Throughout the journey with the Pupils, you will not see a single line of dialogue to tell a story, no emotional cutscenes to force you to be sad. You do not even know who the Pupils are, where they come from, or why they have to find The Eye. And it is precisely this “not knowing anything” that makes emotions sprout most naturally. It does not cram, does not control your mind in the way of “feeling sorry here, feeling sad here”. Instead, the game quietly builds the frame, then lets you draw it yourself.

As Far As The Eye tells the story through what you did, or didn’t do. Through every time you took the harder path to save a few more kilos of rice. Through every decision to keep or give up, to sacrifice or to persevere. It doesn’t make you cry – but if any do, they’re real. No one tells you to feel sorry for the Pupils. But you will. And you will remember. Because the emotion doesn’t come from epic footage or philosophical dialogue. It comes from how you live in that small world.

As Far As The Eye is a little gem in the indie jungle. It doesn’t rush you, it doesn’t scream, it doesn’t flash sales. It just quietly hands you a map, a few kids, a vague goal, and says, “See how far you can take them.” It’s not for everyone. But if you’re the kind of person who likes to reflect, who enjoys the feeling of letting go, sacrificing, rebuilding, and trying again, this game will be one you’ll never forget.
