Introduce about Ambidextro
Indie games are games developed by individuals or small groups without financial support or intervention from major game publishers. Why are such games favored to be classified in a separate genre? That is creativity. Indie game developers invest their own money or raise funds from the community, so they are not bound by the profit or market orientation constraints of large companies. This allows them to be creative, experiment with unique, groundbreaking, and even crazy ideas that not many high-budget games dare to try. One of the games that reaches the pinnacle of creativity in gameplay is Ambidextro.
Ambidextro’s innovative gameplay
In Ambidextro, you play as a royal mage. One day, a witch comes to kidnap the princess and the prince. You go to the queen and propose to save the princess first, then save the prince. But no, the queen demands that you save both at the same time, then cuts you in half. Finally, the queen throws you into the dungeon, as a training exercise so that you can master your two halves.
Throughout the game, you will control two halves of the royal mage at the same time, overcoming obstacles in the dungeon. You will complete a level if you successfully make the two halves touch each other. This gameplay is quite similar to a famous game on the old NES system, called Binary Land. However, in Binary Land, you only need to control one bird, the other will go in the opposite direction.
In Ambidextro, you will have to use both hands, each hand controls one half of the royal mage. Each half can run, jump, and interact with objects independently. The level will fail when the time runs out or one of your two halves collides with the traps. It can be said that Ambidextro is a very difficult game, when you have to split your brain in half to control both characters at the same time.
Levels available in Ambidextro
To complete Ambidextro, you will need to clear 100 dungeon levels, then complete the final tower climb to save the princess and prince. The 100 levels are not random like some other escape games, but are pre-designed. The main thing that makes the levels so diverse is the objects that appear in each level:
- Wall: This is the most common object in Ambidextro, the main object that creates the terrain in a level. It may help you stand, but it also accidentally blocks your path if you don’t control your character well. Most levels are not designed symmetrically, the terrain walls with left and right differences are the biggest challenge for you.
- Wooden planks: Help you stand and climb to higher places. Unlike walls, you can jump onto wooden planks from below, but you can’t do the opposite.
- Sand planks: The main function is the same as wooden planks. However, sand planks will disappear after a period of time after you stand on it.
- Ice blocks: The main function is the same as walls. However, you can destroy ice blocks by stepping down or jumping up with your head 3 times.
- Moving planks: Similar to wooden planks, but can move.
- Moving blocks: Similar to walls, but will move very quickly when you stand on them. Each movable block will be marked with an arrow to indicate the direction of movement of that block.
- Doors and Switches: Doors block the path of the character. You can open the door with the open button placed somewhere in the game. Each switch will only open the door marked with the same. There are two types of switches, wall switches will only open the door as long as you stand on it, the other type is a floating switch – just press it once and the door will stay open forever.
- Wooden crates: Act as movable terrain. You can push the wooden crate to move it in the direction you want. Wooden crates can be used as a platform for you to jump to higher places, or as a weight to activate wall switches without the character standing there.
- Springs: Allow you to jump twice as high as normal when stepping on them.
- Synchronized air cushions: Placed in pairs in the game, one deflated and one inflated. When a character jumps on a stretched cushion, it will collapse, causing the other one to stretch and act as a spring to push the character standing on it up.
- Colored board: Same function as wooden board, but has an on/off state, you can only stand on it when it is on. The yellow character jumping will turn off all purple boards and turn on all yellow boards in the game, the opposite happens when the purple character jumps. When both characters jump at the same time, the state of the colored boards will not change.
- Switch gate: Contact with the switch gate will immediately swap the two characters with each other. Although not a trap, this is the most annoying object in Ambidextro, making you constantly have to think when the character is swapped left and right.
- Spike: Usually attached to the wall. Like other platform games, touching the spike means losing immediately.
- Chain hammer: Similar to spike, but can move in a certain trajectory. There are three types of chainsaws in the game, one moves horizontally or vertically, the other moves horizontally in an arc, and the third stomps down when you get close.
- Fireballs: Fired from a gun barrel mounted on the wall and have a straight trajectory. Of course, touching them will cause you to lose the game.
